If it's weird, it's in Lembeh and nothing gets much weirder than Frogfish which are
here in profusion. Ranging in size from a few inches (Painted Frogfish) to over a foot
(Giant Frogfish) all are members of the anglerfish family. They have a tiny wormlike
lure that's extended from the top of the head, over the mouth, to attract small fish that
think they see an easy meal. When a few inches away, the frogfish will (very speedily)
open its mouth and suck the prey in--they have been timed at 1/500th of a second. The
color variations are infinite and usually match surroundings, sponges are a favorite
and as the first picture of a black Painted Frogfish nestled in a dark colored sponge
will show, they are not always easy to find. There are several varieties here including
the fabulous and rare Hairy Frogfish.
