Beqa Lagoon, Fiji where Beqa Adventure Divers (website http://fijisharkdive.com/)
will give you one of the greatest "big animal" encounters you will ever experience.
There are many shark feeds around the world but this one is unique featuring up to
eight different species, the highlight being 40+ Bull Sharks. It's highly organized and
they do a great job getting you (safely) in a place to see these giants (10 feet or more)
really close. The Bulls are down deep, the first dive is at 100 feet, we had murky water
conditions and not much sun so it was dark down there. There is so much action with
the sharks, huge schools of big Jacks and Snappers, it's all rather overwhelming for
the first few days and the photography is challenging. This is really a dive experience
that the video people will love. The feeders are "Papa" and "Rusi". I would rather have
a camera in my hand than a tuna head! "Papa" is feeding the smaller Blacktip and
Whitetip Reef Sharks, close to the surface with nice light. Not that this makes it any
easier to get a photo as they are also move incredibly fast, seeing them in the
viewfinder is hard enough, focusing on them is worse.
The dive operation funds the Shark Reef Marine Reserve which preserves an area set
up to provide a safe haven for the sharks and other spectacular underwater life that
Fiji is famous for. This is really a unique operation that can give you the big shark
action in the morning then take you further out to the ocean side in the afternoon
where the tropical fish and wonderful soft corals are a real contrast.
